-도 (as well, also, too)

'-도' is a particle in Korean grammar that means 'as well', 'also', or 'too' in English. It is typically used after nouns or objects, and can also replace subject particles (은/는 & 이/가) or object particles (을/를).

The meaning of '-도' depends on the context, so it's important to read the surrounding text carefully in order to understand the intended meaning. For example, "바나나도 좋아해요" can be translated as "I like bananas too" or "The banana also likes [something/someone]". As long as you understand the context, it shouldn't be difficult to interpret the meaning

  1. 저도 한국음식을 좋아해요. [I also like Korean food.]
  2. 지금부터 저도 운동을 시작할게요. [I will start exercising too, from now on.]
  3. 제 친구도 그 영화를 봤다고 해요. [My friend also said they watched that movie.]
  4. 이 책도 재미있어 보여요. [This book also looks interesting.]
  5. 저도 이 일에 도움이 될 수 있을 거 같아요. [I think I can also be helpful in this matter.]
  6. 제가 가게에서 물건을 살 때, 친구도 같이 살 거예요. [When I buy things at the store, my friend will also buy things together.]
  7. 이번 주말에 저도 가족들과 함께 여행을 갈 거예요. [I will also go on a trip with my family this weekend.]
  8. 어제 저도 그 영화를 보고 왔는데, 정말 재미있었어요. [I also watched that movie yesterday and it was really interesting.]

However, when '-도' is attached to particles other than subject or object particles, you cannot omit them.

  • 저는 밖에서 운동을 해요. 그리고 집에서도 운동을 해요. (Correct) I exercise outside. And I exercise at home too.
  • 저는 밖에서 운동을 해요. 그리고 집도 운동을 해요. (Incorrect) The second sentence can have the meaning of “The home also exercises.”

  • 저는 오늘 공부를 해요. 그리고 생일에도 공부를 할 거예요. (Correct) I'm studying today. And I'm going to study on my birthday, too.
  • 저는 오늘 공부를 해요. 그리고 생일도 공부를 할 거예요. (Incorrect) The second sentence can have the meaning of "My birthday is also going to study."
