좋다(to be good)

놀다 (to play)

• 영화가 좋았어요. (The movie was good.)
• 나무가 높았어요. (The tree was tall.)

• 저는 그 노래를 알았어요. (I knew that song.)
• 친구들과 놀았어요. (I played with friends.)

2. When the word stem ends with vowel 'ㅏ', combine the stem with '았', move the stem’s final consonant to 'ㅇ' position of '았'.

3. When the word stem ends with an 'ㅗ', combine 'ㅗ' with 'ㅏ' so that it becomes 'ㅘ'.

보다 (to see)

1. 보다 -> 보
2. (보 + 았)어요 --> (보 + 았) = 봤
3. 봤 + 어요
4. 봤어요.

오다 (to come)

1. 오다 -> 오
2. (오 + 았)어요 -> (오 + 았) = 왔
3. 왔 + 어요

• 영화를 봤어요. (I saw the movie.)
• 친구가 방금 왔어요. (My friend just came.)

Use –었어요 when the word stem’s final vowel is neither ‘ㅏ’ nor ‘ㅗ’.

먹다 (to eat)

재다 (to measure)

• 전등을 켰어요. (I turned on the light.)
• 돈을 냈어요. (I paid the money.)
• 제 몸무게를 쟀어요. (I weighed myself.)

3. When the stem ends with vowel ‘ㅣ’, combine 'ㅣ' with '었', so that it becomes '였'.

기다리다 (to wait)

1. 기다리다 -> 기다리
2. 기다[리 + 었]어요 -> [리 + 었] = 렸
3. 기다렸어요.

웃기다 (to make someone laugh)

1. 웃기다 -> 웃기
2. 웃기 + 었어요 -> [기 + 었] = 겼
3. 웃겼어요

놀리다 (to tease)

1. 놀리다 -> 놀리
2. 놀리 + 었어요 -> [리 + 었] = 렸

• 버스를 기다렸어요. (I waited for the bus.)
• 친구를 놀렸어요. (I teased my friend.)
• 그 농담이 웃겼어요. (The joke made me laugh.)

4. When the stem ends with 'ㅜ' vowel, combine 'ㅜ' + '었', so that it becomes ‘웠’.

주다 (to give)

1. 주다 -> 주

부수다 (to break, smash)

1. 부수다 -> 부수
2. 부(수 + 었) -> 부쉈

비우다 (to empty [out])

5. 하다 + -였어요 = 하였어요. It becomes 했어요 (it’s shortened from 하였어요).

Past tense of '이다' is '이었어요' or '였어요'.

1. When the preceding noun ends with a vowel, use 였어요.

2. 제가 산 것은 컴퓨터였어요. (What I bought was a computer.)
3. 저희 할머니가 어렸을 때는 가수였어요. (My grandmother was a singer when she was young.)

2. When the preceding noun ends with a final consonant, use 이었어요.

1. 저의 직장은 아주 바쁜 곳이었어요. (My workplace was a very busy place.)
2. 이 빵은 썩은 빵이었어요. (This bread was spoiled bread.)
3. 그 공원은 예전에는 동물원이었어요. (That park used to be a zoo in the past.)
